reply 1997 shippuden

📺 i've been watching reply 1997, technically my first kdrama. as with a lot of live-action media in the romance genre, i usually find myself more invested in the environment/culture the characters live in instead of the actual love story, but to be fair everything up until episode 12 hasn't really progressed the relationship between the protagonist and the male lead. but now that i've started the second part of the show, which is after a 5-year timeskip (reply 1997 shippuden), the more i have to hand it to the slice-of-life first half of the show. i'm more invested in the characters now because i got to spend that time with them, even if some of that time was meandering.

and like everyone else who watches this show, i will be complaining about the second male lead, because i cannot stress enough how creepy i find this guy. for context, the secondary love interest is the older brother of the protagonist's childhood friend, so someone she's known for years. he's also her teacher (and previously engaged to her dead older sister pwede ba itigil niyo na yan?). neither of these tropes are new to me, but i point to a specific instance where i think they really messed up in execution. there is one flashback scene with the main couple as kids, played by kids, but they did not get an aged down actor for the older brother/teacher. as this was the first show in the reply anthology, i'm sure there was a budgetary reason for having the same actor, but it increased the creep factor immensely.

what annoys me about this show's framing device is that it's supposed to be a "mystery" who the protagonist's husband turns out to be and they seem to be adamant on pushing the older brother as a viable option when 1) it is so obvious that it's the childhood friend and 2) i don't like him and have thought of dropping the show multiple times because i could not stand the sight of him on my laptop screen.

🤼 i continue to be mostly checked out of mainstream wrestling and content with following individual wrestlers instead. and in the past month, thanks to my unbridled kid lykos fandom, i slipped into following the british indie wrestling scene. a significant part of my descent into britwres is the currently on-indefinite hiatus promotion modern nomad pro wrestling, because they really are just that damn funny and i love the commitment to themes/gimmicks per show. i love it the most when wrestling isn't wrestling.

also can we talk about thekla in AEW? i love that spider girl. her art is so cool too.

📑 never thought i'd be into loose leaf binders, but here we are. i just love how they permit discontinuity, and they feel a lot less intimidating than a bound book.
